Research Problem
Research Problem
If your chair approved the previous sections of your Prospectus Form, then you will write the Problem section.
Introduction
This week you will write the Problem section of the Prospectus Form. You should revise this section regularly as needed after you will have reviewed more articles in depth. Keep in mind that your chair may recommend you seek out additional library support, if he or she believes you may benefit from this. Remember, it is the chair’s job to consider what resources would best serve you, the student.
Discussion: Conceptualizing a Social Problem into a Research Problem
A social problem involves an issue that affects a specific population/discipline. It is the issue that students see “on the ground” so to speak. The social problem is often what prompts students to think about a topic of interest drives their dissertation topic. Usually such a topic is one that students identify with, sometimes having personally experienced some aspect of the problem as it exists in the world. All too often, students want to solve a specific social, organizational, clinical, or practical problem rather than explore a research problem.
Transitioning from Coursework to Dissertation
Week 1: Transitioning from Coursework to Dissertation
Introduction
Welcome to Writing a Quality Prospectus!
Your first task in this course is to review the guides, rubrics, templates and resources that will inform your completion of a draft Prospectus Form throughout the quarter. Take the time to familiarize yourself with them now so they can serve as your roadmap.
Transitioning from Coursework to Doctoral Writing
Discussion 2
Writing as part of the coursework you have completed to date has been a demanding exercise and you have hopefully been practicing your use of objective language and professional tone while adhering to APA format. You may have received very positive feedback about your writing so far or you may have received feedback that suggested there is room for improvement in your academic writing. Now that you are working on parts of the dissertation, your academic writing will be very much a focal point. Strong scholarly writing is essential at this phase for you to articulate the empirical argument you need to make to complete doctoral research. Your chair therefore, will be looking more closely at your academic writing than prior instructors likely have.
To Prepare:
- Review the “Transitioning from Coursework to Doctoral Writing” webinar.
- Consider challenges to capstone writing that may arise for you.
By Day 4
- Having viewed the webinar, describe the challenges in transitioning to dissertation writing that concern you most. Think of a time when you received negative feedback on your writing, or suggestions for revisions you objected to.
- How did you respond to constructive feedback and how might you respond if you receive such feedback now?
- What will you do to address the challenges you anticipate in transition to dissertation writing?
Supporting Literature
Supporting Literature
If your chair approved the previous section of your prospectus, you will write the Supporting Literature section of your Prospectus Form.
Introduction
Probably the most important step in the research process is searching recent, peer-reviewed literature and reading articles related to the general area you want to investigate. The area is based on an identified social problem. As you read and learn, you will narrow your focus. This is how you will identify a discipline-specific research problem.
Discussion: Taking Advantage of Resources
Walden has numerous resources available to doctoral students to assist and support them during the dissertation phase of their program. For this Discussion, visit/review some of the offices and resources available to you (e.g., Academic Skills Center, Office of Research and Doctoral Services, Academic Writing Center, IRB Office, etc.) and discuss which of those resources you might use at different stages in the dissertation process.
To Prepare:
- Review the Learning Resources available from Walden's Academic Skills Center, Office of Research and Doctoral Services, Academic Writing Center, IRB Office, and so on and consider how they might help you and guide you through the different staged of the dissertation process.
